Biography

Future musician Kid Rock was born on January 17, 1971, in a small rural town of Romeo in state Michigan, the USA, and got the name of Robert James Ritchie. The only advantage of living in such a place like Romeo for a boy, interested in music, was its close location to Detroit. Inspired by music of Beastie Boys and Run -d.m.c. Rock tried to make his own music since childhood. In high school he disc-jockeyed the parties for beer and finally joined the band of Bo Wisdom of Groove Time Productions in a neighbour town. It was the time when at some show Kid Rock got his nickname. A representative of Jive Records accidentally saw Kid at a concert and they became interested in the guy. In spite of the parents' strong disapprove Rock signed a contract with the label at age 17. In 1990 he released the debut album, featuring the mix of rap and hard rock. Its lead-single's too sexual lyrics Yodelin' In The Valley was the reason for a scandal. Rock did not answer the expectations of Jive, and the parties parted. For several years Kid Rock recorded and released albums for a small auditory of devoted fans, having a contract with an independent label Continuum. Rock's sophomore attempt The Polyfuze Method was finished in 1993, it was praized by critics for humour and eclectic approach to styles though bringing no big success to the author.

In 1994 the artist opened his lablel Top Dog and released an EP Fire It Up. Early Mornin' Stoned Pimp saw light in 1996, recorded with an extreme lack of money. Rock's financial side of life was so dark that he had to find accidental works and sell bootleg copies of his own albums to pay debts for the studio. Nevertheless he managed to make his own band by that time, which he called Twisted Brown Trucker. One of the first band members, Joe C, was an old fan of Rock, famous for the encyclopedic knowledge of Rock's texts. By that time such hard rock teams like Korn, Limp Bizkit and alike were dominating the scene and Atlantic Records became interested in Rock. The musician did not disappoint them - he released his cult work Devil Without A Cause in 1998. Due to big promotion by the label and MTV the first single Bawitdaba became a national hit of the summer. The next winding track, Cowboy, wonderfully featuring country, rap and rock music, helped the album to become 7 times platinum. By the end of the year Rock was nominated for two Grammies and headed to his first tour with the kings of rock scene Metallica.

Striking while the iron is hot, Rock re-released his old material with a new song, American Bad Ass, in The History Of Rock in 2000. Though the album did not become as big as Devil Without A Cause, it sold well. At the end of the year Kid was deeply upset by the death of the oldest Twisted Brown Trucker member Joe C. In the spring of 2001 Rock became the victim to paparazzi due to his relations with the scandalous Playboy model and actress Pamela Anderson. In April 2002 they married but soon the engagement was called off. In November of the same year Rock presented his eighth edition Cocky with the singles You Never Met A Motherfucker Quite Like Me, fulfilled in the Southern rock style, and a beautiful blues ballad Lownly Road Of Faith. But the real success and the breakthrough to the new auditory were brought by the country style ballad with Sheryl Crow Picture. The same year Rock had to search for a new DJ, as his former one went solo. In 2003 the artist released the self-titled album Kid Rock, featuring a handful of hits: Jackson, Mississippi, Cold And Empty, I Am and Single Father. 2004 became the year of the rocker's first live record, Live Trucker, containing moslty his two last performaces. In 2006 Rock again married Pamela Anderson after an issue of her pregnancy. This time they needed 5 months to divorse. In October 2007 Rock finished his new disc, Rock N Roll Jesus, becoming the first Rock's album to debut in charts number one. Three years later the rocker’s discography was enlarged by a strong long play Born Free (2010). During the record process Rock collaborated with famous rock, country and rap-performers, thereby Born Free got powerful and at the same time harmonic sound. Numerous experts agreed that Born Free became one of Kid’s best works since the release of Devil Without A Cause.

Cocky is the fifth studio album by Kid Rock. Released in 2001, it is his third release for Atlantic Records.

The album is known for featuring the ballad 'Picture', recorded as a duet with Sheryl Crow. In May 2011, the album was certified 5× platinum by the RIAA and has sold 5,344,000 copies in the US as of December 2013.^[4]

According to his official website that made a timeline for his 45th birthday in January 2016, Cocky was certified 6 X platinum on August 26, 2008. However RIAA only certified the album at 5 X platinum.^[5]

The album was dedicated to Rock's former assistant and hype man Joe C., who died in November of the previous year from celiac disease complications. 75 songs were written for the album, but only 30 of them were recorded as a song for the album. One of the recorded songs that did not make the album was 'If I Was President', a standard blues song that Rock plays frequently in concert. Another song left off the album was the Joe C. eulogy 'In Your Lifetime'. 'Picture' received a CMA nomination in 2003 for Vocal Event of the Year and would go on to be Rock's first gold single. Some of the songs that were recorded during this album's sessions appeared on Rock's self titled album.

Cocky saw a shift in Kid Rock's sound, featuring more ballads and less rapping than the preceding albums,^[6] and featuring more classic rock influence.^[1] Critics and journalists believe the music of Cocky encompasses hard rock,^[1]hip hop,^[2]heavy metal^[2] and Southern rock.^[3]

Entertainment Weekly writer Rob Brunner described Cocky as a concept album, stating, 'Boastful and defensive, confrontational and thin-skinned, loud, rude, and proud of it, Kid Rock is a composite of blatantly unpleasant stereotypes sure to scare the neighbors: strutting ghetto pimp, Skynrd-loving redneck, heavy metal burnout.'^[2]

'Trucker Anthem' contains a sample from The Wizard of Oz.^[7]

Brunner described ”Midnight Train to Memphis” as MORcountry, and ”Lonely Road of Faith” as a power ballad.^[2]

”You Never Met a Motherfucker Quite Like Me” makes lyrical references to Hank Williams Jr., ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Run-DMC’s Joseph Simmons, and Willie Nelson.^[2]

Cocky received mixed reviews from critics, earning a 57 out of 100 rating on Metacritic.^[8]

Stephen Thomas Erlewine, writing for Allmusic, gave the album four out of five stars, writing, 'unpretentious, blue-collar hard rock hasn't sounded this good in nearly 20 years, and that's reason enough to celebrate.'^[1]

Entertainment Weekly writer Rob Brunner gave the album a B, writing, 'Kid Rock’s tear-down-the-walls ideal of a world where rappers can sip whiskey with rednecks is a compelling fiction, and if the cross-pollinated musical results aren’t always as exciting as the conversation no doubt would be, you have to at least admire the breadth of his vision.' Brunner felt that 'Too much of Cocky meanders into boring stylistic experiments', calling 'Picture' a 'sappy duet'.^[2]

Rolling Stone writer Barry Walters gave Cocky three out of five stars, writing, 'Rock self-consciously builds on his badass-hick-with-a-heart-of-gold image [...] [The execution] is really corn, [...] Rock's AC/DC, Run-D.M.C. and Lynyrd Skynyrd. tributes now come across as clunky imitation.'^[11]

Release and promotion[edit]

The album's first single was the rap rock track 'Forever'. The song charted at number 18 on Mainstream Rock and number 21 on Modern Rock.He performed the song on TRL and The Late Show with David Letterman, leading to a number 8 debut ( would climb to number 3 after release of Picture). He and Hank Williams Jr would perform on CMT Crossroads in late 2001. The second single was the ballad 'Lonely Road of Faith', released in January 2002. The song was heavily promoted by WWE in the video tribute to the History of WWE. The song was also heard on WB's Smallville and MTV's Real World. Kid Rock would go on 'The Cocky Tour' then join Aerosmith and Run DMC on the 'Girls Of Summer Tour'. The song would peak at number 15 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks. In July 2002, a censored version of 'You Never Met a Motherfucker Quite Like Me' was released to radio and peaked at number 32 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks. Kid Rock would test out 'Picture' at CMT's Farm Aid with Allison Moorer filling in for Sheryl Crow. When Sheryl Crow's label butted heads with Rock he released the song in November 2002 with Allison Moorer. As the Allison Moorer version began climbing the country charts, Sheryl Crow's people changed their minds.^{[citation needed]} The Sheryl Crow version was released in January 2003. It would become Kid Rock's first crossover hit charting at number 4 on the Hot 100, number 5 on the Top 40, number 2 at AC and number 17 on country radio. The single would be certified gold and spend 52 weeks on top the Country Singles Sales chart; it also peaked at number 1 on the US Singles Sales charts and number 2 on the Canadian Singles Sales chart. The song would be Sheryl Crow's second most successful single after 'All I Wanna Do'.The album climbed all the way back to number three. The song would be his first gold single and push the album from 1.8 million sold to 4.7 million sold (Cocky since has sold about 5.4 million). The song was nominated for CMA Vocal Event of The Year.

A clean version is also available, removing most vulgarity, as well as the song 'WCSR'. The clean version of the disc also features a picture of Kid Rock's face on the disc, while the unedited version has an image of Rock's hands with raised middle fingers (a reference to Rock's previous album Devil Without a Cause which featured just Rock's right hand making the same gesture); both feature Kid Rock's name. The edited version of Cocky also renames track 8 'You Never Met a White Boy Quite Like Me'.
